The unanticipated coming together of the former National Super Alliance (NASA) principals has changed Kenya’s political space ahead of 2022 polls. After the prolonged differences between the former NASA presidential candidate and coalition principals, no one expected the birth of the popular One Kenya Alliance (OKA) also known as Sacred Alliance.
Although the coalition is yet to be formalized, the bromance amongst Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford-Kenya’s Moses Wetangula and KANU’s Gideon Moi clearly indicate a formidable force ready for the battle. The new alliance tested its muscles in the recent by-elections in Machakos county, Matungu and Kabuchai constituencies. The principles jointly held mega rallies to drum up support for their candidates. The joined efforts delivered Matungu seat to ANC and Kabuchai seat to Ford- Kenya. Later, on 18th March 2021 mini senatorial polls in Machakos county, Wiper Party candidate Senator Agnes Kavindu recorded a landslide win to become the first female senator in the lower-eastern region.
After the former NASA presidential candidate, Raila Odinga and his party allegedly shortchanged other principals in the much-popularized 9th March 2018 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta. Many saw this as the end of his running mate and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other NASA principals. However, few years down the line, the One Kenya Alliance is swiftly taking shape, leaving political pundits and rivals waggling in confusion.
Speaking during the first interview after the Machakos senatorial by-election on Citizen TV, Wiper Leader expressed his satisfaction with the win and thanked the people of Machakos for trusting him and the Wiper party at large. Kalonzo also took the opportunity to warn the political opponents and insisted his journey to the statehouse is unstoppable.
“We have started a journey with honest friends, and for sure, we’re a team to watch. I see now opponents are panicking after our win in Machakos, Kabuchai and Matungu; this is just but the beginning. “ Kalonzo Musyoka
According to the wiper leader, talks are still going on, and the new alliance is ready to accommodate like-minded leaders and Kenyans. The One Kenya Alliance alias “Sacred Alliance” has been holding a series of consultative meetings, and probably there is more yet to come. More political formations and realignments are expected with slightly a year and a half to 2022 general elections. For now, it is a matter of wait and see.
